Typically defined as modern folk, Shawn Zuke’s music embodies the Alaskan spirit of originality and beauty. Powerful

and hypnotic, her original compositions weave a tapestry of goddess magic and soulful rhythms.  Her vision is to raise

the consciousness of herself, family and community through music, dance, and connection to the environment.  She

performs at venues such as the Fairview Inn, Organic Oasis, and Maxine’s as well as the Anchorage Folk Festival and

other music festivals across the state of Alaska.  Her latest CD “Of the Light” has already received considerable air play

on many Alaskan and West Coast radio stations.  Since its release, Shawn has been focusing on songwriting and

performance with various artists in Alaska and Washington. Her distinct vocals, dynamic presence and dedication

to independent music are proof of Shawn’s continuing force in the Alaskan independent artist community and beyond.  

She is currently working in the studio on two music projects (with Earthshine and the FreeMadonnas) and will start her

new solo album, Surrender, this year as well.

   Artist Statement

My first memory of a significant musical soul felt connection began when I was in middle school, sitting on my bed

daydreaming.  Listening to Emmy Lou Harris and imagining being on stage performing and singing my heart out to

the masses.  I still remember to this day the feeling that came over me, one of pure joy and fulfillment.  Looking

back on it now, I understand that was a sign from a higher source nudging me with an affirming daydream that would

set the course of my life. 

 

In my latter 20’s I turned in my request to the universe to write, play, sing, and perform my own songs.  12 years and

many original songs later, I find that songwriting gives me an avenue to go deeper within my spiritual experience on

earth.  At times songwriting is like going through an emotional catharsis of the soul, letting go of the pain I feel or

expressing the bliss of life that overflows from my heart.  Other times I become a channel for other’s experiences that

needed to be shared and heard in a powerful way.  I write and sing for Love.   I perform and play so that my community

can witness through my experience that your dreams can and do come true. 

 

My songs are born sometimes with intention and sometimes through fate and timing.  I can sit down, still my brain,

and state that I am ready to write.  Usually the process begins by picking up the guitar and strumming out a great

chord progression that calls out a certain kind of mood.  Then the words start floating out on billowing white clouds of

thoughts through the pencil and onto the paper.  It is very clear to me when the song is completed, although the

refinement of its performance has just begun.

 

When I am creating music I am expressing the best part of me.  My life’s purpose is entangled between the healing

arts and music.   The feeling I get when I write is very similar to the feeling of praying.  My songs are an expression of

prayer with great message’s of faith, hope, and the resonance of my truth and existence.  Intuitively, it is etched in my

soul that my destiny is to share my songs and voice for a greater cause that has yet to be fully discovered…..
